Andrea’s lovely lavender layout has a wonderful quilt inspired background with lots of triangles cut from floral pattern papers. If you’re stuck for ideas for your next scrapbook layout I always say go back to the basics and build from there. For instance choose a simple shape but repeat it in different sizes, create an easy grid design, a simple slip in pocket page but make your own journaling cards or chose a single color and use many shades. This last one is referred to as a Monochromatic page and they can be simple or detailed and challenging but they are super fun to create! Pick a color and just start pulling out all the papers and embellishments from your stash that have that color, whittle it down to the shades that work best together or that go with the colors in your chosen photos. So today let’s take a look at some colorful Monochromatic ideas to get us started.
This sweet layout is pretty in pink with soft pastel shades of pinks, perfect for a darling baby girl design. Notice how there are small touches of other colors in the paper and embellishments but that’s ok, it’s still very pink forward, white or cream are considered the background and so it’s still monochromatic. I spotted this idea on the Echo Park Paper Instagram page.
Two shades of blue cardstock and Dutch pin wheels are ideal for a Tulip layout. Andrea used a template and dies to create this cool mosaic design inspired by Delft pottery that lets the colors in the vintage photos really stand out. Julie used two of those back to basics I mentioned, a grid and green monochromatic for a fun St. Patrick’s Day inspired design. Each square grid section has several layers with stitching and includes photos, pattern papers, small embellishments and words in tiny stacks on white with mixed media elements in the background on a green base. Since we had a pink girl design here’s a very blue baby boy design with cardstock in shades from light teal to deep navy. Daisie cut scraps of papers into diamond shapes, adding white gel pen marks along the edges to create a loose quilted look that has great movement across the page! Krislyn’s sunny yellow page uses pretty flower stickers, a border punch, a large layered sun flower for journaling and a die cut title. I love the petite pattern papers, the one with a white background helps break up all the yellow and the darker paper for photo matts help them stand out too. Allison’s cool double page spread uses shades of tan to reflect the fun cardboard chaos in the photos. She stitched along the edges of her pattern paper strips and wove them to create an amazing pattern for the background and she even used star embellishments and a wooden title in those same tan colors too. Anna’s fruity layout uses lots of shades of pink from deep to pastel with some small pops of teal. Notice how she spread out the darker colors to move the eye around the layout. Nicole’s lovely layout has lots of florals and tags in many different shades of blue that work so nicely with the black and white photo, which is a good tip for monochromatic designs, sometimes black and white or even sepia tones work better so colors don’t clash. This fun junk journal layout is in a collage style with everything from flowers to animals and insects, vintage elements and graphic patterns all in rich orange tones. Don’t be afraid to mix styles with a monochromatic design, it still works because the color ties it all together. I spotted this on the Journal Alchemy Instagram page.
I do consider black and white to be monochromatic, just like with any other color the white is more of a background and the color, in this case black is the star. Black and white is perfect for graduations or formal occasions like Heather’s layout. There’s lots of strips and borders, a large die cut title in the center and many stars. And last but not least is Julie’s trendy teal layout with loads of layers and mixed media elements like stamping, sewing, burlap fabric, a doily, thick acrylic words and hearts, metal details, lace trim, ribbon, rub-ons and more. Take a closer peek at the Bramble Fox blog.
